Geek me More is a specialized dating site aimed at "Geeks." Launched in 2011 by a group of friends who wanted to create connections and meet people who share the same passions as they do.
The brief aims to improve the user experience of the mobile application by making it less outdated, more ergonomic, intuitive, and in line with the new generation. Emphasis is placed on attracting the female target audience, currently underrepresented with 10% women compared to 90% men. The GeekMeMore team wants to better engage and appeal to this demographic. It is crucial to resolve security issues in user interactions and to rethink the subscription system by adopting a freemium model for a determined period.
To help users personalize their profiles, we have ensured that they have the ability to select their intentions and interests. Additionally, to combat fake profiles and spam, we have added a feature that allows only one phone number to be associated with a user account.
Thanks to this robust filtering system, Geekmemore users can refine their search to find people who precisely match their needs and interests. This significantly enhances the user experience by facilitating connections with relevant profiles.
To help combat inappropriate behaviors, we have given users the ability to compliment the other user during the conversation and to rate their experience. Each user has a badge attached to their profile that shows how well they behave towards each other.
To obtain a basic understanding of the public space, we conducted semi-structured interviews. Additionally, eight individuals completed a survey. Here are the results, although the survey did not provide us with much data unlike the semi-structured interviews, which were rich in insights.
Is aged between 18 and 24 years old, 25% are between 25 and 39 years old
Would be interested in sharing their passions, 60% in meeting new people; 20% in finding love on GeekMeMore
Is still registered on a dating or community application
Thanks to the distributed questionnaire and the interviews conducted, we were able to better understand our female users, their habits, and the main issues they encounter. We decided to focus on the four most common problems for the rest of the project: overpopulation, inappropriate and offensive behaviors, lack of authenticity, and lack of moral values.
We conducted a user test with 10 people to gather insights on the strengths and weaknesses of our solutions, as well as the experiences of our target users. This allows us to confirm or refute our hypotheses, improve the user experience to meet the expected quality level, and promote continuous improvement by uncovering a significant portion of usability issues.
When signing up, users choose their interests, which can lead to confusion about others' expectations. Geekmemore, a dating platform for enthusiasts of geek culture, allows connections based on their common interests.
To clarify objectives, we have added an "intent declaration" screen so that users know each other's goals.
To address the challenge of detecting bad behavior on the application, we implemented a badge system. However, opinions are divided due to the subjectivity of ratings and competition among subscribers.
We decided to rethink the naming of the feature and the badge hierarchy principle, opting for a variety of different badges at the same level rather than a hierarchical ranking. We also revised the message from Geek me More that explains the rules about badges.
To encourage kindness in discussions between users, we have implemented a badge system. This system allows for better recognition of well-behaved users: the higher the badge level, the more the person is considered trustworthy.
During user testing, we found that the message was not clear. Therefore, we modified it and added the ability to choose between different characteristics.
Designing for a niche audience like geek culture enthusiasts is challenging but rewarding. Understanding their specific needs required commitment and empathy. This project taught us to adapt designs to a specific target group.
Updating a 10-year-old application presented unique challenges. We learned how to modernize digital products while balancing new technologies with user-friendly designs.
